Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Friday, October 24, 2014
Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that focuses on remembering friends and family who have passed away. The celebration happens on October 31st, November 1st and 2nd. If you want more in-depth info you can check out websites like Celebrate Day of the Dead or National Geographic.

I have also loved sugar skulls, which are very colorful skulls made of sugar that are given as gifts to the living and the dead. They are never morbid or creepy (or shouldn't be). The sugar skulls should be happy and vibrant.

When Melissa from Rebel and Malice posted she wanted to do a Day of the Dead blog tour, I jumped on board. My first idea was to make a onesie for baby #3 to wear after he arrives. I have a sugar skull stencil already so it just seemed to want to be done.

I was incorrect...It didn't want to be stenciled onto a onesie.

Or at least the black didn't want to be.

So scratch that design....I found a free printable one from Hello Little Home and used it for an iron on.

Still not really what I had envisioned,  I scratched the whole idea together.

Let's move onto something else shall we. I do use the same stencil I attempted to use on the onesie as a paper design for my etsy shop.

The design was inspired by some friends who got married on Halloween who painted their faces for Day of the Dead as part of their attire.  He also happens to be amazing tattoo artist who did a sugar skull on my arm.

There are a lot of items that can be purchased that have the Day of the Dead theme to them. Here are some of my favorites:
Pretty In Ink Jewelry has a lot of different dogs and designs with the theme. I personally have the Bulldog print and necklace.

Paper Source has these Sugar Skull cookie cutters by Fred if you want to attempt your own. They also have a variety of other items like calendars, glasses and paper goods.

And one of my favorite fabrics for Day of the Dead is Bonehead by Michael Miller.

A great place to find items for Day of the Dead is Etsy. You will be able to find unique pieces and  you would be supporting fellow crafters.

Thank you Melissa for setting up a blog tour. Be sure to check out the other blogs set up to be apart of  the tour and sign up to win the giveaway!

  1. Thank you for being on the tour. I don't think the first onesie was a bust ;) And what an amazing gift! I would love something like that.
